According to a recent report, boAt, a popular Indian manufacturer of audio products and smartwatches, has experienced a significant data breach, compromising the personal information of over 7.5 million customers. The breach, allegedly orchestrated by a hacker known as ShopifyGUY, poses a risk of financial fraud and phishing scams for those affected. If you’ve recently made a purchase from boAt and provided personal details such as your contact number and email address, there’s a possibility that your information is part of a data package being sold on the dark web. Forbes India has reported that sensitive customer details, including names, addresses, contact numbers, email IDs, and customer IDs, are among the data being sold. boAt, being a prominent player in the smartwatch and audio product market, has been approached by India Today Tech for comment on the breach. The prevalence of such breaches, coupled with the availability of stolen data on the dark web, underscores the importance of cybersecurity measures. India, like many other countries, faces challenges in mandating timely reporting and disclosure of data breaches by companies.
