New Delhi: India has expressed serious concern over the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, which poses a threat to peace and security in the West Asia region, according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs. This comes hours after Iran initiated a drone and missile attack on Israel.

The ministry has called for an immediate de-escalation, urging all parties to exercise restraint, abstain from violence, and return to diplomatic negotiations. They are closely monitoring the unfolding situation, with Indian embassies in the region maintaining close contact with the Indian community. The ministry emphasized the importance of maintaining security and stability in the region.

In a significant escalation in this geopolitically crucial area, Tehran has launched over 200 drones and missiles at Israel, asserting it as an act of “self-defence” following an attack on Iran’s diplomatic mission in Damascus.

The Israeli military has reported that most of the missiles were intercepted before entering Israeli territory.

US President Joe Biden has pledged unwavering support for Israel in the face of Iranian attacks. “I recently convened a meeting with my national security team to discuss Iran’s attacks on Israel. Our commitment to Israel’s security against threats from Iran and its proxies is steadfast,” Biden stated.

US forces have been actively intercepting drones launched by Iran towards Israel, as per a defence official. “Our forces are prepared to provide additional defensive support and to safeguard US forces operating in the region,” he added.

President Biden also had a telephonic conversation with Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu has asserted that Israel will respond strongly to the attack and has been preparing for a direct assault by Iran for years.
